EveryFinder: Price Guide.

At some point a client wants to know how much video will actually cost. You can tell them whatever you want, but here's what we'll charge you.

We charge $400 a day to shoot, as a base cost, and $400 a day to edit, and we charge $75 per DVD copy. This is handy to know if you have a very low budget job. It takes us three times as long to edit a tape as it does to shoot it. So to shoot a full day and edit it costs $1600.

There are jobs that require far less than a full day's tape. Some ethnographies can take a researcher all night to observe, but we may have only two hours of tape at the end, since there are places we can't or don't want to video. For these jobs we charge $1200, figuring it will only take two days to edit.

You can feel free to negotiate the price you are willing to pay, as well. We can scale back our editing time to almost nothing if you wish to make all the decisions yourself. Or if you need something very quickly, usually we can scrape together a video pretty quickly. By quickly we mean a day or more, not an hour or more. There are limits to the laws of physics that hold true for time-based media like video. It takes a whole hour to watch a whole hour of video and no one will be able to change that.

What we deliver is usually three to five short movies based on themes or insights that support your findings. These movies are usually about two or three minutes long. If you'd like extra long videos for any reason, we will work up a quote for you.

We export the movies to the Windows Media Format, which trial and error has shown to be the easiest video format to insert and play in PowerPoint presentations. We can also export to any flavor of computer video you request, as long as you know exactly which setting you want me to use. We can guess for you if you're not sure what setting you need, but can't guarantee that the guess will be correct.

We can make branded DVDs of your project, if you provide the graphic elements needed to print on the DVD and cases. RealityCheck DVD covers are used for RealityCheck clients, for example. We also have a branded menu that the client sees when he views the content. If none of this is necessary, as in cases when you are the only one looking at the DVDs, we can adjust the price.

We do have normal lives, like you, and charge more for long days and rush jobs. A long day is measured in the amount of time we spend traveling and shooting and getting back to the hotel, not in terms of hours of tape shot. If you plan on doing a day that starts at 8 and ends at 8, expect to be charged more for that day. Most of the time it all evens out and nobody needs to worry about this, but in the case of jobs with tight budgets it is important to note. We will let you know as soon as we go over budget on a job.

Travel days will cost $200. If you have a job where we need to fly in the night before, this cost will be added to the estimate. As a rule, we like to fly into any place we need to shoot at least one flight earlier than we need to start, in order to assure everyone that we will get there. Having some idea of the shooting schedule is essential for booking travel, so please don't forget to let us know when you expect us to be ready to shoot, and when we should be finished. If we can fly in and shoot the same day there is no charge for travel; we only charge for travel days when we must use a day for travel and can't do any shooting. In the case of a travel day being used for traveling between two different jobs we will split the fee between the two jobs.

That should cover everything, but you never know. We want to make everything as easy for you as possible, and look forward to providing you with a quote on your next project.
